Here are tips for pacing yourself and those around you amid evacuations, threat of evacuation, sheltering at home, or the uncertainty of what may come:
- Take slow breaths. This will help you remain of sound mind through any circumstances.
- Drink water throughout the day.
- Smile at your loved ones and your neighbors. Show them how adversity does not change how you feel about them.
- If feeling frantic or overwhelmed, focus on just the next step, and then the next.
- If not in imminent danger, take periodic breaks from news or media.
- If you are in a "waiting game," focus on nourishing activities, including healthy meals or potlucks with neighbors, games with housemates or neighbors, talking on the phone with loved ones, checking in with colleagues, journaling, a household project you enjoy, or double-checking your supplies and preparedness plans.
- Remind yourself how adversity does not change the person you are or the good you can share with others.
Reminders of simple ways to calm and pace are so valuable in heightened moments. Feel free to share this post with those you know who may be experiencing stressful times.
